What is a PUWER Assessment?
A PUWER assessment looks at whether a piece of work equipment is not only compliant on paper but genuinely safe in its design, condition, and day‑to‑day use. Unlike a PUWER inspection, which focuses on checking the physical state of machinery at a moment in time, a PUWER assessment digs deeper into how the equipment is designed, installed, operated, and maintained. It identifies the hazards that could arise during normal use, cleaning, adjustment, or foreseeable misuse, and evaluates these against the specific duties set out in the PUWER Regulations.
The outcome is a clear understanding of the risks and the practical measures needed to eliminate or reduce them—ensuring the equipment is suitable for its intended purpose and that employers meet their legal responsibilities.
