Client Overview
Carn Engineering was appointed by one of the UK’s largest groundworks and civil engineering contractors after their previous inspection provider struggled to cope with the scale and pace of their operations. The client required fast, geographically clustered inspections across a constantly moving national fleet—something their former supplier could not deliver reliably.
The business operates hundreds of items of plant, lifting equipment, attachments, and forestry machinery spread across England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland. Equipment is continually redeployed between depots, compounds and active construction sites, with many locations lacking formal addresses. The lack of real-time visibility and slow response times from their previous inspection company had resulted in bottlenecks, overdue items and operational delays—creating the need for a provider capable of true national agility.

Objective
To replace the client’s underperforming inspection provider with a fully scalable, multi-disciplinary solution capable of:
• Delivering high-volume LOLER and PUWER inspections in rapid-response geographical clusters.
• Maintaining full compliance with no overdue examinations.
• Providing real-time visibility of all assets.
• Supporting both depot-based bulk inspections and dynamic on-site coverage.
• Matching the client’s fast-moving deployment model with flexible, engineer-led coordination.
Scope of Work
Carn Engineering implemented a nationwide LOLER and PUWER inspection program covering all machinery used within the client’s construction, groundworks, forestry and haulage operations - including additional complex assets their previous provider struggled to support.
• Excavators, mini diggers, tracked dozers.
• Telehandlers and rotating telehandlers.
• Dumpers, rollers, compactors and skid steers.
• MEWPs, boom lifts and scissor lifts.
• Lifting accessories and temporary works lifting equipment.
• Generators and compressors.
• Forwarders, skidders, forestry tractors.
• Chippers and shredders.
• Hydraulic winches, grapples, timber cranes.
• Harvesters, felling heads and attachments.
• Lorry-mounted cranes (HIABs) and commercial vehicle lifting systems.
• Flatbed and beavertail vehicle lifting gear, tail lifts and ancillary vehicle-mounted lifting equipment.
• Specialist plant attachments including piling hammers, augers and hydraulic breakers.
Most inspections were completed in large, high-volume batches at the client’s regional depots - allowing Carn Engineering to clear backlogs quickly and maintain consistent throughput. Dynamic on-site inspections supported equipment deployed to isolated, short-duration or rapidly changing projects.

Our Approach
• Full onboarding and digital transfer of all fleet data, resolving gaps left by the previous provider.
• High-volume depot inspection teams to process large geographical clusters efficiently. • Engineer-led dynamic scheduling, allowing rapid response without call-centre delays.
• GPS mapping pins used for locating equipment on sites without postcodes.
• Multi-disciplinary engineers capable of inspecting all plant, vehicles and lifting items in a single visit.
• Real-time reporting and instant certification with digital dashboards and defect alerts. Key Outcomes
• Backlogs created by the previous provider were eliminated, restoring full compliance.
• High-volume regional inspections enabled the client to maintain rapid deployment without delays.
• Reduced downtime, with multiple equipment types inspected in one visit by multi-skilled engineers.
• Complete national asset visibility via Carn Engineering’s online portal.
