This document outlines recommended inspection and examination frequencies for key categories of engineering equipment in accordance with United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland legislation. It covers UK laws such as LOLER, PSSR, COSHH, Work at Height Regulations, EAWA (BS7671), and PUWER, and Irish legislation including the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005 and the General Application Regulations.

LOLER – Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 / SI No. 299 of 2007
UK: LOLER Reg. 9 requires thorough examination before first use, after installation, and every 6 or 12 months depending on usage.
Ireland: The Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (General Application) Regulations 2007, Regulation 52, mirror these requirements for lifting equipment.
PSSR – Pressure Systems Safety Regulations 2000 / Irish Pressure Systems
Requirements
UK: Requires a Written Scheme of Examination (WSE) and periodic inspections by a competent person.
Ireland: The General Application Regulations under the SHWW Act mandate similar requirements for pressure systems.
COSHH – Control of Substances Hazardous to Health 2002 / Chemical Agents
Regulations
UK: LEV and control systems must be examined at least every 14 months.
Ireland: The General Application Regulations covering chemical agents require periodic inspection and maintenance of control measures.
Work at Height Regulations 2005 / Irish Work at Height Requirements
UK: Personal protective equipment (PPE) used for work at height — such as safety harnesses, lanyards, and fall arrest systems — must be formally inspected by a competent person at least every 6 months.
Ireland: Equivalent obligations exist under the General Application Regulations, including requirements for safe equipment, fall protection, and periodic inspection of PPE.
BS 7671 – IET Wiring Regulations / Electrical Safety Requirements
UK: Electrical installations require initial verification and periodic inspections (5 years commercial, 3 years industrial).
Ireland: Electrical safety provisions under the General Application Regulations align closely, requiring safe installation and maintenance.
PUWER – Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 / Irish Work
Equipment Requirements
UK: Work equipment must be inspected and maintained at suitable intervals, typically every 6–12 months, with pre-use checks recommended.
Ireland: Similar obligations exist under the General Application Regulations for work equipment safety.
